# Summary The dealership receives widespread criticism for poor service quality, including damage during recall work, lengthy wait times extending weeks or months, unresponsive communication, and refusal to provide promised support for warranty claims. One reviewer praised the EV charging station, but the overwhelming majority of feedback highlights inadequate staffing, facility issues, and customer service failures that have led some owners to seek repairs elsewhere.
BIG ISLAND Motors (Hyundai): I went in for a "safety recall" on rear camera issues on 24-25 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid and when it was done I had some scratches on the camera housing that were not there before the service. it is literally a big smudge that obscures maybe 20% of the camera view in the middle of the screen. where I had no issues with my camera before work, now i have a major issue. They denied having done the damage but I know that it was working perfectly when i gave them the car for the recall work. now I am expected to pay for damage that they did to the tune of $800-$1000. The car is about 20 months old, ~16,500 miles at the time, and is garaged when not in use. I will be opening cases with Hawaii consumer protection agencies, and federal agencies. The reputation management services that carfax and other reputation management services provide is absolutely doing a disservice to Hyundai customers on the big island. How is it that on google their reviews are 2.4, yelp reviews are 2.5 and there is a second review page for Big Island Motors with 4.4? I'm very disappointed that safety recall work produces results that are WORSE than when I took my car in for the safety recall. this recall was not performed properly and I will reach out with a complaint letter to NHTSA to make them aware of this substandard work that makes the situation worse after the recall. Customers should be very wary of Hyundai on the big island (we have no choice at this point though)
Tough to go back there. Bought a new 2020 Hyundai Kona, put only 9,000 miles on it over the first 24 months. Suddenly, A/C failed. When I tried to make a service appointment, they were 2 weeks out, claiming a mechanic shortage. I accepted a date provided, expecting that warranty would cover the cost. Within a few days as we continued to drive it, the dashboard alarm alerted us to "engine overheating". Luckily we were only a few blocks away & dropped off the car. Big Island Motors had promised us when we bought the Kona a loaner car in the event there ever was a major problem that took days to repair---no such loaner was provided. We had to start renting a car. The Kona sat at the dealership for days. They must not have telephones because I had to stop by there in person several times to learn what was happening--horrible communications. A sick mechanic one day (their shop often looks half empty), and a service writer MIA another day delayed information. Finally, we were told that ants had infested a relay (a common problem here on the Big Island we learned from an independent repair shop manager.) They told us that the Hyundai warranty did not cover their $7,000 repair estimate! Calls to dealership management brought no answers, no responses. Our auto insurer stepped up & immediately evaluated the proposed claim. They called back promptly & quickly emailed us with procedures. We still do not know yet whether our policy will provide any coverage. All they needed, because of the magnitude of Big Island Motors' repair estimate, was a photo of the fuse relay the dealership claimed was damaged by ants. No response by Big Island. When I personally stopped at Big Island Motors to obtain the photos that were required by the insurer, service department personnel stated they "were too busy to free up anybody to take a photo" and email it to the carrier. Therefore, on the 14th day of inaction and lack of commitment from Big Island Motors, and their statement that Hyundai's warranty on a new car with barely 9,000 miles would not be valid, I had AAA tow our car away from there and over to the proven, trusted local garage that used to work on our old previous car. Subsequently, conversations with local friends in and near Kona, Hawaii revealed that other people have had problems with ant infestation and also rats gnawing at wiring insulation because some manufacturers now use soy-based insulation instead of proven plastic insulation.
The service is adequate. The wait times for service are horrendous. (Even if I didn't have to wait for parts, the wait is about 25 days.) The building is ramshackle and looks like it was built 50 years ago. The markups on new cars is at least $2,000 and rises up to $5,000 for an EV. It's cheaper to buy on the mainland and ship it here.
Literally no service here. Dealer-only Hyundai Tucson repairs won’t be scheduled for months IF they even answer the phone. Service desk employee told me I’m lucky that I even had my car looked at. ????
The EV charging station is awesome Very fast Tesla driver needs to use CCS 1 adapter
