I'm in the process of selling my truck in Phoenix when I get someone reaching out to me, inquiring about the truck. We talk shop, discuss what this USED truck needs, the few problems it has, and negotiate a price over the span of several days. I am very transparent with him, sending extra photos of pertinent information and past damages so he can better make a decision. After some discussion we meet on a price, only for him to finally tell me that his name is Soren and he works for Flagstaff Chevrolet Thrift Center, aka Tyrell Marxen Thrift Center, and that this would be a truck for his lot and not a personal vehicle. He then goes on to tell me we can meet at my price after I bring it to the shop to get it inspected. At this point I’m a little apprehensive about taking the whole day and driving up to Flagstaff on the off chance that this is a shady deal and I have to drive back down the hill in the same truck I thought I’d sell there. I give it a shot anyway and head up first thing this morning. I get there and Soren is waiting to meet me, he’s polite enough and seems to know trucks. He ‘just got promoted to manager of the thrift lot’, good for him! He instructs me to follow him up the street to the Chevy dealership in town. No big deal. We get there, they take the truck and do some inspections, run codes, etc., the things you’d think they’d do when buying a new car. Only about 5 minutes pass of me waiting in the lounge until Soren gets me to meet with his manager. I thought I was doing a deal with Soren, and he was the manager? We get into the office and I don’t even sit down before the GM or Manager starts telling me things that are wrong with the truck that I’ve already mentioned and discussed with Soren at the price we talked about, as well as things that I don’t believe are accurate. He offers me more than $3k under what I discussed with Soren and drove up here for. At this point I’m upset but not surprised. I instantly refuse the offers and leave. I feel like this is a normal practice for car dealerships, and totally a scummy business practice. This Soren kid is young and apparently just starting his management career, so I wouldn’t fault him entirely but the disconnect between him and his managers on customer service and negotiating is so far out of whack I cannot recommend anyone use them in their car selling process. If the communication were better between him and his governing dealership, maybe I wouldn’t have wasted a day driving up to Flagstaff to be severely low-balled on an already very competitive offer. Soren - good luck and maybe find a more honest dealership to work for.
